Artist statement: Ritual dismemberment. It was never about the art The ceramic cup is never a cup, it is a refreshing drink and a studio conversation. The ceramic plate is never a plate, it is a shared nourishment and social gatherings. The ceramic vase is never a vessel, it is the flowers, perfume, and memories of the giver. The ceramic sculpture is never a ceramic sculpture, it is myself, family, friends. The Biennale is never a Biennale of artwork, it is an artists meeting, sharing and encouraging, and the rediscovering of ourselves. It is about old and new friendships. It is comparing of studio rituals, manifested in images and objects. Here I am, this is what I do, and here you can see is a record of it. It is the finding and using of a common language. In this spirit, I made dozens of ceramic porcelain paper clay parts. they are both strong, and brittle. They can be connected together, or easily dismantled. Together, they create a network of artists. At their ends they insert and receive. As I say goodbye to each artist at the Biennale, I will gift one part of my sculpture to each one of them. It was never about the art. ,Some of the artists with their gifted parts of my sculptures.
Ceramic Art Traditions A ceramic artist like myself has different social traditions, compared to other exhibiting artists. A tradition at ceramic symposia is for participating artists to make art works during the symposia. These works are kiln fired and presented in a final symposia exhibition. The artists also make very small works, which are kiln fired and given as gifts to each of the other participating artists. These small gifts are a physical reminder of conversations and friendships made. My gift to each of the Biennale artists is within this ceramic artist tradition. Technical challenge How to safely ship the 1.8m high, delicate ceramic objects from Western Australia to Italy? 3,500 km (or 8,400 miles). Over the preceding months a series of prototypes were developed, fired, assembled, and discarded. I then revisited my kit set system, and developed it to a completely new level. Each “arm” was now broken down into two to eight interconnecting parts. The stems, also, became five to ten parts. The circle centers were designed to pack inside each other. Then they were repeatedly trimmed, and as they become thinner and lighter, they changed shape. I used the stronger, but more temperamental porcelain. Many failed during firing. The based became bigger, but heavier, as the work grew taller and taller. Eventually, to reduce this weight, the disk shaped bases become removable curved rod “claws” around a smaller disk. A wilder look. To reduce the total weight, all rods were re-made, and again remade as thinner, and then thinner parts. 
The three, 1.8-2m high works packed down within a 20 x 30 x15 cm package,
inside my aeroplane "carry on” luggage.
