“art/works”, a Nordic Ceramics Symposium and Workshop, was organised by John Erik Kristensen, in the period 23rd - 26th July, 2007 in Mandal, Norway.

Ceramists, potters and sculptors from all over the world were invited to participate.

The topic for the 2007 event was Paperclay, a combination of paper and clay which brings new possibilities to potters, sculptors and other ceramists, combining higher green strength with possibilities to combine wet and dry materials and lighter weight in the fired pieces.

The use of Paperclay is rapidly spreading, and i.e. in Western Australia, a third of all clay used is now Paperclay.

In the Nordic countries, Paperclay is not widely used, which is something we attempt to change with this symposium.

The symposium was held at Kulturfabrikken, a former furniture factory, which the last year has been transformed into an Art Factory.

The symposium consisted of both theory and practice, with lectures, individual tuition, preparation of Paperclay and working with Paperclay individually, in groups and together in a common building and firing of a large structure.

PRACTICAL

The presentations/lectures were held indoors.

Graham Hay introduced the material paperclay, its history, and demonstrated in action its possibilities.

Dr. Kim Jeoung-Ah lectured on her research, where she has pushed the material's possibilities to it's limits.

Malene Pedersen, Leena Juvonen and Astrid Heimer lectured on how they use paperclay in their art.

The workshop took place in a big tent.

The participants received instruction from each of the teachers Graham, Kim, Astrid, Leena and Malene.

The whole group also worked on a common sculpture, a structure, which was fired on the last day.

This website was first created to share information on paper clay, as it was not widely available.  This was before textbooks and when there were only a few scattered journal articles.  It grew into the documentation of art projects and listing of upcoming learning opportunities.   It is a symbolic “thank you” to the many thousands who participated in events I led, who shared so generously their techniques and personal stories.  This enriched both myself and ultimately my future students.  Ultimately it is a gift to the next generation of potters, artists and art students.  I hope it inspires you, informs you and provides an example of the sort of creative journey you have or are about to begin. Enjoy your travels!  Cheers! Graham
