"Graham, Great workshop! DMB"(handwritten note 13/4/08)

"Graham,
I can't even begin to imagine the havoc you've visited upon those with traditional clay training as I am still quite close to thunderstruck myself. In fact, my kids clearly think I've finally gone round the bend because I broke out in laughter at dinner this eve for no apparent reason when I thought of how the L. Clay artists would've received such a bombardment (and they are quite sure that I am crazy).
You are an excellent teacher, one of a rare breed of teaching-artists who knows that creativity is essential in every aspect of life. If there is anything more I have a deep regard for it would be this: That you have the essential grasp of the principal that "the teacher is ever the student" (or Grace, if you prefer.) It is a tremendous gift that you give, and for that there is no adequate way to say Thank You." (DS email: 14/4/08)

"I know L. ahs been in touch with you but I wanted to also write in and say a big thank you for coming to CAC and presenting a fabulous workshop for all the attendees. It was so informative and everyone is talking about still !"(AK email: 12/4/08)

"Graham - thank you so much for all your hard work over the weekend as well as your enthusiasm and willingness to help, explain and encourage. It was truly a great experience. I learned a lot - much of which I may actually retain! Again, thanks. (CL email 14/4/08)

Posted comments 23/5/07 (2 months later) "The list of equipment to bring was way too long. We never used any of it! Pain in the Ass. Too much time spent making little pieces to dry on stove never got back to using them-didn't know what they were for so didn't make useful stuff to use. Better to tell us to make assigned parts, give time to use them. we ca be creative on our own time. We ere here to learn a new material and new techniques. Graham - You put a lot of work into this Workshop, so I'm taking time to tell you my thruth of how it was for me. Thank you for a very enlightening experience and the pleasure of your company. You are obviously a master at this and had vast stores of useful and excieting information for us, but I feel, some presentation techniques squandered those riches. Why those crazy curly sticks to put together? The issue became physics rather than look-what-paperclay-can-do. If we'd put together a box, then added feet, and handles (for example) it would have taught me, at least, much more than hours balancing crazy rods and making weird do dads we never used. Four boxes (or something) would be even better. Practice / learn. Your work, and seeing slides of it, was very inspiring. (Beautiful, original stuff.) That told us what was possible. We needed more hands-on-basic this-is-how-it-works-and-feels. I think this stuff maybe great for my work but didn't have a chance to find out! For those of us, like me who have shows coming up and need to keep producing, the time to experiment with paperclay remains a dream. Wish I had had more basic hands-on practice with your tutelage avaliable. Loved the eyeball/nose/ear demo! So, how was this critique for you?" PG

"This has changed the way I think about clay-can't wait to get back to work." Subsequent email: "I have received no less than 10 e-mails from the participants of the NJ workshop telling me that it yours was the "best workshop they have ever attended." We all truly benefitted from the weekend and are really grateful to you for helping us think about mud in a totally different light."PF

"I wish there was a higher mark than perfect because you would get it from me." PC

"Your perfect but I'm not so I will really appreciate being able to get the CD (thanks to Pat F. too!)" JV

"A little more on on one while the students work" SB-B

"want to experiement with regular clay throwing & pclay additions" CL

"Increadibly valuable experience-lots of ideas to try" GD

"Thank you Graham. There have been some frustrations yet at the same time it has been a great learning experience" PF

"I would like a basic information sheet with slip recipt etc on it so I don’t have to search through DVD" SW

"It would be good for demonstrations and slides to have a predetermined time each day so own work can be planned around them. Demos to go a little slower to allow time for absorbing information." JS

"I learnt other techniques for pottery / clay in general beyond paperclay specific Graham is exceptional at presenting & teaching & a great character-really a lot of fun! Although more time is always a good time, knowing & meeting people-so much info!! Now I can go home & conceptualize projects! It would have been to have quieter jets & traffic! Many thanks to Barbara Brown for being such an excellent host!" (No name provided)

"Fantastic workshop!!" [handwritten note]"Hi Graham, Thank you for being such an inspiration to me. It's great to finally meet you at the workshop." AF

"Very energetic, got in LOTS of info. Cann't get better than 9-5. Clay Planet is good to have us & it's easy shopping for more clay for example."

"DO SOME MORE FUNCTIONAL PIECES DO ONE IN SACRAMENTO & I WILL COME AGAIN. TOO COLD!!! EXCELENT WORKSHOP!! DF

"It would be nice to have a one page summary, or even a list, (even on the website) of all the techniques he taught us. 2 whole days ARE needed, but tough to get away, w/o missing. Maybe a little more table space. Loved this-Graham is so great a teacher-so much to learn, so little a brain. [smilie face]" Hand written letter: "Dear Graham, What a wonderful opportunity to meet you! and get a taste of this amazing paper clay process. My 3 Portuguese Water Dogs, my husband and my winter-wasted yard don't understand why I'd rather be here. I've been playing around w/paper clay for +/- 6 months & this has been an eye opener! You're right, this going to totally change me. Thanks so much." ER

"Graham Hay. Thank you to G.H for coming! Incredibly informative…great artist..very stimulating-great workshop!" JL

"Would have liked a slower pace. Graham is so full of ideas-can't keep up with him Thank goodness a lot of this is on his website" LK

"Graham is a fountain of knowledge. I especially liked his slideshows-mention any idea & he can show you someone whose work might interest you. Amazing. Too short, but necessary" SG

"So MANY great ideas & techniques that it made my head spin! Engaging personality, enthusiasm & sense of experimentation, surprises, mysterious ingredients in the slip-such as Shrimp Salad! We REALLY ROOM-and access to the OUTDOORS as well as MICROWAVE & FRID. Clay Plant has it all." SW

"I like the slideshow in the work room so we can keep working. 1st day; we spent about 2-2 1/2 hours making parts for Sunday. My table mate & I made far more pieces than we could use. I'd rather had more time to play first day." (no name provided)

"I need more time!!!"AR

"Really enjoyed the day. I thank you for your generous giving of information."EM

"Would be useful to have sample pieces in the flesh-just little ones - of all the technique-rather than the slide show. I had a good look at various websites before coming. Thank you -the workshop was really inspiring."OW

"Working in paper clay has been an absolute delight! I got to explore a completely different clay body. It’s an easy, feasible, and liberal material to work with. There’s so much one can do in paper clay. Sky’s the limit! Thanks Mr. Hay!" MN

"No matter how many books you may read on paper clay, you can’t get the feel of the medium unless you work in it. That’s when you start exploring the many possibilities. The one thing that really appealed to me was that in paperclay don’t have to worry about being unable to work when it’s dry. Also, unlike other claybodies it has greater strength…" SS

"To work in paper clay was really challenging, not only it became possible for me to portray my ideas in clay, but also I’ve learnt a lot of techniques about how to use this material. One of my works is titled “nature”. I feel the initial stages of my work are more influenced by it. Paper clay has its on qualities and possibilities, which makes it a complete material for a ceramist. The most convenient aspect of paper clay is that, it can be joined in dry state, which proved to be very helpful in my work."SS

"I heard about a workshop in ceramics about Paper Clay, it fascinated me a lot. I was surprised to see Graham Hay’s work, when I saw his website. At the workshop watching him work was a unique experience. He explains the possibilities of the medium and then lets his students explore. I found him interested in circles and curves, looks like he’s the master of using shapes. As a whole I’ve learnt many new things and this includes all the work he showed us in slide shows, Graham at work, his technique, experimentation." AM

"Working in paper clay was just like looking in clay in a whole new perspective and a new world of creation altogether. Paper clay was good to work with; the best part being the fact that it was recyclable, mend able, and even just the slip can be used to construct forms. Some of the few things that I found difficult were that rather than the regular clay paper was and impurity to clay so its elasticity seemed to affected. On the whole it was a diverse experience." QZ

"Working with paper clay made me experiment all those forms that I was ever scared of attempting. It involves more of experimentation and allowed me to go wild with my imagination in a way I was no more afraid of crack, as I could always fill them up at any stage. Its not a must to build the form in one go. Small units can be built and later joined to make a large scale sculpture. We could actually use various combustible materials as our armature such as leaves wooden piece, paper cuttings, wool and cotton by dipping in clay."HTL

"Initially, I had an experience with the paper clay but this time it was easier and quite a lot of fun working with the new recipe. Large-scale sculptures and different forms are easier to handle and even cracks and breakages can be cured at any stage easily. Quick drying and dry-to-dry joining are a lot easier in it. Paper clay expands the boundaries amazingly. The last three weeks I have spent on exploring this new medium were mind opening working at solutions for problems in handling the forms." MK

"My experience was very pleasurable and refreshing. I’ve learnt new ways of working with clay. Had never thought of using this medium in such different techniques. Although I found it very difficult in the beginning but very soon got the hang of it. It helped me in broadening my vision and improving my skills. This workshop gave me independence of thought, which will further help me with innovative techniques and make projects interesting. We got a chance to interact with Mr. Hay. If I were given another chance to join the workshop, I‘d not give a second thought!" RS

"My perception of clay has changed completely. The paper-clay workshop was a complete eye-opener to me. I have been dabbling in pottery for the past eight years but I have never felt as much in control as I do now. Being able to work in both the plastic and dry form demands more creativity and pre-planning, and execution is much more exciting and rewarding as you can do twice as much work in half the time. This freedom is, in itself, a very enriching experience." AJ

"The body of work produced during this month does not follow any single theme; it’s more about experimenting and stretching an new material to the limits. Looking at formal solutions, possibilities with very thin clay work, and dry joining has interested me the most. To me it is kind of an artistic liberation, from the way I used to approach this diverse medium, and eventually the way I connect to the work that is born. I have used paper clay slip for dipping/spraying textile materials and pieces of baby clothes to make delicate assembled works, conical forms and hanging sculptural pieces.SM (Ceramic Lecturer) "

"Working in paperclay is very interesting. It has its own language and behaviour. Initially I found it difficult to understand the character and nature of the clay but then I enjoyed its challenging characteristics. All of us have done a lot of unbelievable experiments in it. Now we can make the things, which we thought were impossible. Paperclay also has its own world of texture and feel. NN (Ceramic Lecturer) "

"The entire process of working in paperclay is a series of challenges and surprises. Every stage in the process from preparing and understanding the material, to making the piece in entirely a new direction, to firing it, has its own constraints and rhythm. This makes the process much more interesting and boosts our energies to explore more in such a magical method. Now, we don’t have to worry about the rapid drying of clay because unlike other clays, it works much better in dry form. My pieces are a general exploration of the material and its many possibilities."JA

“paperclay is/was new to me and I have thoroughly enjoyed this workshop. Thank you very much indeed. “

“a fun & enjoyable class. “

“A revolution indeed “

A great way to learn about paperclay & appreciate its usefulness for art at school in the future.

It really broadened my mind & expectations about clay. Thanks Graham (smiley face here)

Wish I had more time to play (one day workshop).

Well explained. Lots to take in.

I learnt enough to keep me experimenting for a long time and already working out ideas.

very beneficial.

Sorry I had only the one day. It was great.

Paperclay has certain properties that seem to be more suitable for younger children, activity was very good and success was achieved by all.

Wow- I think paperclay has many applications & I hope to use it again- very versatile
